A new pope is throned
Not that I care who is leading the Roman Catholic Church, as I do not follow the teachings of the Beeble or pray to Sky Daddy or his sun JC, but I am rather ticked that it is some guy from the US. Trump is just going to be all over himself that it was during his term in office that a pope from the US was throned as the head guy. Every time the pope comes up in discussion I am reminded that there is always more than one pope sitting at a time 5 currently and only 3 of them see the Roman guy as the head of the church.
The Roman Catholic guy sees himself as the head of the whole thing successor to Saint Peter, the Coptic Catholic Patriarch along with Melkite Greek Catholic pope see the Roman Catholic guy as the head or equal (although the Roman guy gives him the nod, not that any have not been given the nod that I know of) not really sure of how they can call himself Daddy to their flock of Bishops while still calling the Roman guy Daddy.
Then the Coptic Orthodox Pope and the Greek Orthodox Patriarch do not see the Roman Catholic guy as Daddy or equal. I have not really fallen down the rabbit hole far enough to see how the Popes and Patriarch see each other but just how the Roman guy sees the others and how they view him.
There was a 6th but his chair has been defunct for a few decades now 1964 Latin Patriarch of Alexandria.
I was also informed that there is occasionally an anti-Pope of Rome. I guess it can happen when there is real division between the Bishops who go into voting mode. I thought maybe it only happened prior to conclave when Cardinals got to go do their thing without being locked behind a door.
Speaking of not being locked behind a door so far 2 years and 9 months is the record for the longest time the Roman Popes chair has had no owner, it would have gone longer but the city the election was being held in said enough is enough put them all into a room locked the door and removed the roof! After that the pope who was elected thought it be a good idea to lock all future Bishops in a room together and prevent any outside forces to try and sway who was going to be God’s favourite little boy, or at least God’s favourite Roman Catholic little boy. The shortest was a few hours because all the Cardinals where all already in town because the previous Pope stepped down after 20 odd days, Pope Celestine V was elected then died shortly after.
The Coptic Orthodox Church (Pope of Alexandria) does it the coolest way I feel, some little kiddo gets to say “I picked the Pope!”
The Bishops and Bishop towel boys/representatives, vote on their top 3 guys. A blindfolded kiddo then picks one of the names out of a chalice as to represent God’s will. Ceremony is public but highly spiritual and solemn.
The Greek Orthodox Church (Patriarch of Alexandria or Constantinople)
Pick their God’s Next Top Man in a rather boring way the Bishops just vote, and they are not locked in a room or anything, they keep there stuff to themselves though and there has been few political posturing since the Ottoman Empire.
The Eastern Catholic Churches or the; Melkite, and Maronite
Pick their Pope/Patriarch the same way as the Greek dudes do except they look for the Roman guys blessing. Again to my knowledge it has never been denied, however I think it would cause another great schism if it was denied and I do not know how the Roman guy would look in the eyes of his Sky Daddy!
Then there is the other Abrahamic religions, some of which have rankings while others do not.
