Human Rights March 2019 (2 of 2)

I am a woman who was Assigned Male At Birth (AMAB), as such I have many masculine features. I, like many other people in the Trans community, have been put in spaces which may endanger not only my mental or emotional safety but also my physical safety.

The Saskatchewan Ministry of Health started to cover genital reconstructive surgery in 2016, commonly known as bottom surgery. The World Professional Association of Transgender Health (WPATH) recognizes that genital surgeries are not the only Trans Related Surgeries (TRS) that someone may require to feel safe in their bodies or behind their faces. The Ministry of Health fails to realize that covering bottom surgery helps a minority in the Trans and Genderqueer community while not covering other procedures fails to provide the life saving conditions for many others.

People in Saskatchewan, including individuals in the Trans and Genderqueer communities, “have the right to dignity and equality under The Saskatchewan Human Rights Code. Because human rights are so important, the Code takes precedence over other provincial laws. The agency that enforces the Code is the Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission.” When Saskatchewan created the section affording individuals in the Trans Community rights not all people in the community received the equal rights they deserve, the Saskatchewan Ministry of Health also failed to provide the medical coverage required by many. The decision to exclude some surgeries from provincial coverage by calling them cosmetic or experimental exemplifies a human rights violation against many in the Trans and Genderqueer communities.

A small amount of people in the Trans and Genderqueer community need bottom surgery; similarly a small amount of people need top surgery, while there is some coverage for top surgery all that is covered is a double mastectomy. These surgeries are covered however only a small amount of people require those particular procedures. Some who require those surgeries also require other TRS, while many others do not require bottom or the currently covered top surgery yet they do require other TRS.

As someone in the Trans community who did require bottom surgery and does require other TRS I feel my right to dignity and equality are not being respected in whole by the Government of Saskatchewan and the Ministry of Health. I further believe the right to dignity and equality for those who do not require bottom surgery but do require other life saving TRS are being violated by the Government of Saskatchewan and the Ministry of Health.
