Saskatchewan Legislative Assembly and the Use of US Social Media Platforms

To whomever this may concern

My name is Reann Legge, and I am a Saskatchewan resident writing to bring attention to an ongoing concern regarding the use of US-owned social media platforms by elected officials for public and official communication.

On February 7, 2026, I sent a letter to the Legislative Assembly outlining serious concerns about the use of X, BlueSky, and YouTube by Saskatchewan politicians. My concerns included citizen privacy, data sovereignty, and the ethical and operational risks of government communications being hosted on foreign platforms. I also noted that other provinces, such as New Brunswick, have taken steps to discontinue the use of X for official communications.

I received a response from the Legislative Assembly Library stating that while they are reviewing public engagement processes in 2026–2027, the Legislative Assembly Service does not determine or influence the communication methods used by elected officials and that I had contacted the appropriate representatives directly.

Given the increasing importance of digital privacy and government accountability, I believe this matter is of public interest. Canadian-hosted, open-source platforms like Mastodon, Lemmy, or PeerTube could provide secure alternatives, protecting citizen data and demonstrating ethical governance.

I am reaching out to inform you of this issue and to encourage reporting or further investigation. I can provide copies of my correspondence with the Legislative Assembly upon request.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Reann Legge
