Open Letter to A&W

To Whomever This May Concern

I am a woman who was Assigned Male At Birth (AMAB), as such I have masculine traits. I am used to and completely understand if someone makes a mistake and misgenders me, I just politely correct them and carry on with my day. When someone repetitively misgenders and refuses to correct themselves it can be emotionally draining and psychologically damaging.

The morning of the 19th of April 2018 I was at the A&W on the corner of Ave W and 22nd Street in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. I went through the drive through and was repetitively misgendered, even after several attempts to correct this person. This interaction seemed to affect me, in a negative way, for the rest of the day.

I write you this as I am in a place where I can recover and move on however many other people close to me, or in a similar situation, do not have the ability to say that. I ask that better training be put in to place so that future interactions such as the one I had do not happen again at any location to any person.

Dear Reann,
First of all,  I would like to offer my sincerest apologies for your experience in our drive-thru yesterday.  I am grateful to you for bringing it to our attention, as this is definitely something we need to be aware of to ensure that it doesn’t happen again.  You are 100% correct in saying that we need to do a better job training our staff.
  I have spoken with the manager at this location and she will have a conversation with her staff members to make sure this doesn’t happen again. Once again I’m very sorry that this happened to you, and thank you for taking the time to let us know about your experience.
