My white privilege was showing
I shared a post yesterday about the removal of a John A Macdonald statue and the name a Park in Winnipeg was given. I disagree with removing the John A statues, but think they should get a statue of equal size and quality of an important First Nations person beside them.
Removing reminders of history does nothing but gives us reason to forget about it. If we forget history we are doomed to repeat it. If we remove bits of history we are only going to make it a us verse them situation, rather than a we are equal situation.
I saw this post and without thinking of my privilege I dismissed the naming of the park in Winnipeg. I need to remember that Canadian culture is made up of influences from around the world, so celebrating something from another culture is very Canadian.
After having my ego checked I did some research into the original post and realized it is a very conservative leaning page that posted it, I cannot say which way I lean but it is not to the right at all.
