So Scarlett Johansson put on her big girl pants and realized that a cis actor taking on the role of a trans character is wrong. There are plenty of actors who are trans that would be able to play the role so much better. There are so many actors who are trans that would be able to add authenticity to the role. There are so many actors who are trans that have not been given the opportunity to be recognized.

I am in no way saying that actors who are trans can only play roles of trans characters, people who are trans are already a marginalized group of people so why take away an opportunity for a person who is trans to stand up and get noticed. People who are cis have so many more options to stand up and get noticed as an example Johansson can write her own ticket to what ever role she wants, an actor who is trans needs that door to be opened so that they get noticed.

Johansson's original reply to the backlash was complaints "can be directed to Jeffrey Tambor, Jared Leto and Felicity Huffman's reps." Tambor can be quoted as saying “I would not be unhappy were I the last cisgender male to play a transgender character on television.” From reports it appears as if Leto does not respect the fact he is playing the role of a woman who is trans so that maybe a little lost on him, ie he does not deserve the role or the award. Felicity Huffman paid a little tribute to everyone who worked on the film and then a small tribute to trans people than back to the people who worked on the film, she was later on Opera where she paid a little tribute to the people who are "transgendered" showing a complete lack of respect for the community.

When a door is opened that will allow a person who is trans to get noticed in a positive way, only to be closed by a better off cis person it hurts the entire community. When the door is opened and the person who is trans is allowed to step through so many other doors will open in the future. The amount of doors that will open for someone who is trans is still significantly smaller than the doors that will open for a person who is cis, but that is no reason to stop reaching for more.
