Buy Canadian

Because of Trump’s attack on the world, more specifically his fear mongering towards Canada I have joined the coalition of people who are buying Canadian. I have either cancelled or will be cancelling services offered by US companies, wish I could cancel more faster but I either need to replace things or accomplish certain things first.

I used to pay for YouTube premium, cancelled that. They probably make more money off of you watching ads I hear you say, not off of me they will not! I have a pihole system to block ads, and I have found some recent adaptations to use it to block YouTube ads. So why was I paying for premium if I have this pihole setup? Simple I was paying for premium prior to having this pihole system set up, and never bothered looking into getting around YouTube’s ad blocker technology. If there was a Canadian alternative to YouTube that had all the same content I would definitely switch over to it, but Google owns that monopoly. Speaking of Google, I have not used Gmail for years probably the same amount of time I have been using my pihole system. I stopped using the official google search engine in place with Ecosia, sure it uses google search in the backend but it is not google. I am sure the Google has ways around my ad blocking infrastructure but I do not see it so I guess I can say I do not use Adsense. One of the first things I do when I am installing a new OS on one of my pi’s, which happens less frequently now that I have real (m.2) NVMe drives rather than those SD cards was remove chromium.

I have uninstalled Amazon and Prime Video from all of my devices and cancelled my membership. I seriously wish Amazon did not host a majority of the web with AWS, but there is not much we can do about that. I feel like a little poop for using the Buy Canadian movement to cancel my Prime membership especially after Amazon did union busting in Quebec.

Now Apple is going to be a little harder for me to let go as I am locked into their system and I have no interest or money to get out of their system only to side load a system onto another phone. However Apple is more of a services company, so I can cancel their services. I have a lot of things to do before I can cancel the services however; like change password managers, easier said than done when your password manager is tied to your email anonymizer system.

I have moved myself off of the closed source US social networks and onto open source ones, blocking the American ones with my pihole. I am definitely not getting the same amount of dopamine hits from lemmy than I was from Reddit but that is because the network is smaller.

Finely I am checking stores I am ordering from, and apps that I use to try and avoid US products and services.
