Hello World… again? Take 3!
This is take 3 of this post because I wanted to have my posts to say more than the title and the link on Mastodon. I do not think JavaScript is a very civilized coding language but I am vibe coding baby and Vibe tells me it is the best option for for what I am doing with cross posting I do know a little YAML and I swear it was cross posting with some YAML but thinking about it how?
I had space and CPU power on my VPS sadly it is x86_64 but it is what it is I guess. I have been doing a lot of searching into the web about security, I thought I will get a strong openWRT firewall set up setup a few vLANs, a few APs, and maybe a VPN (or two) and I would be happy! I spent time tinkering away learning things and falling deeper and deeper in love with FOSS things, I really wish I was better at learning computer coding and the such so I could contribute or was wealthy enough to give money but neither of those things are true at the moment.
Any who going further down the security hole I decided that I really need some off site backup, I have a VPS just hanging out with my stuff so I thought that could be a good place to stick it. I was having discussions with people on the selfhosted lemmy.world instance when I had said I backed up to a VPS, primarily so that I know what encryption is and that some third party (Canadian government Bill C-33) cannot see the stuff that is being sent to back up even if easyDNS gets a warrant served on them for my data, they will only be able to see what I want them to see. I am fairly open about my things but I do not want some agency snooping through my private photos just because I encrypt stuff and try to live at a higher, to put it lightly, level of security than the average person on line.
I should also say that I have installed docker, ufw, and maybe a few other things. I have some mastodon-to-ghost docker image and the Ghost docker image running my blog off of the VPS.
I am sure intelligence agencies enjoy the security level I was aiming for years ago, enough to say hey look at me I am making lots of noise. To me aiming at being as quite as possible with less and less information coming out of my LAN.
