So there is that; pride in London
I agree with the sentiment that the Pride in London board should step down. For them to not find away for this hate group to be removed is wrong. Being open as trans is already a very dangerous thing, having hate speech being given at an event by another flavour of queer is a very disgusting thing that will only lead to more violence.
I am absolutely disgusted by the pride in London's board, I was not there so I don't know much about it other than what I have read but still stuff could have been done. Ignorance is never the answer, having any group within the queer community try to erase another is wrong in every way. I maybe a little biased when I say this, as I fall under the flavour T in the queer alphabet, but trying to erase the T spits in the face of the people who started the whole pride movement.
The modern fight for queer rights started with the “Cooper do-nuts riot” in May of 1959 in Los Angeles which was lead by trans and gender queer individuals. The history is a little unclear to this as the weapon of the rioters where coffee cups and doughnuts rather than bricks and fists. Recorded history show that the police fled without the people they where trying to arrest however returned to the scene of the riot with backup. One of the escapees John Rechy wrote about the night in his novel City of night.
Many in the queer community credit Dick Leitsch who organized the "sip-in" of 1966, as the beginning of pride, he and at least two other homosexual men went in to a bar declare "We are homosexuals. We are orderly, we intend to remain orderly, and we are asking for service." This lead to a court case which than made the New York Liquor Authority to abandon there ban on serving homosexual people. In June of 1969, the New York mayor at the time asked Leitsch for help dismantling the Stonewall riot, he said "Even if I could, I wouldn’t, I’ve been trying for years to get something like this to happen.” Leitsch passed away June 22nd 2018.
What we now celebrate as Pride is the anniversary of the Stonewall riots, where women who are trans and drag queens, of colour rioted against the police who raided the Stonewall Inn. Stonewall was a popular place for women who are trans and drag queens to drink and socialize. In June of 1969 New York Police raided the Stonewall establishment, however riots broke out that lasted 2 nights. Another riot broke out in front of the office of the Village Voice after they used some trans- and homo- phobic language to describe the events.
Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners, was formed in 1984 as a group of queer people rallied and fought for the National Union of Mineworkers in Britain, it was not as violent as the Cooper do-nuts or Stonewall riots it played a major part into excepting queer people as that, people!
Any flavour of queer people have there story about how there letter in the alphabet deserves to be there. For any one orientation to say they have superseded the alphabet is wrong, for any orientation to say that another does not belong there is wrong, for any orientation to say theres has done more than the other is wrong.
